Navajo c.1930–1950 Crystal Trading Post Bordered Rug

This hand-woven rug belongs to the bordered Crystal tradition — the style that grew from J.B. Moore's Crystal Trading Post in the Chuska Mountains of New Mexico. Moore's 1903 and 1911 mail-order catalogs introduced Eastern collectors to bordered geometric compositions built around central diamond forms with hooks, frets, and floating geometric elements drawn from Oriental rugs, translated by Navajo weavers into something entirely their own.

A vertical stacked-diamond form anchors the carded heathered-grey field, surrounded by interlocking hooked T-bar and H-bar elements in black and cream, with stepped square motifs in red, black, white, and tan radiating outward to a wide dark-brown border. The dense, architectural geometric infill reflects the evolution that followed Moore's 1911 departure, as Crystal-area weavers developed their own crystalline vocabulary while retaining his bordered format.

The aniline red and iron-mordant dark brown place this firmly in the pre-Jensen era — before Don Jensen's 1944 arrival transformed Crystal weaving into the borderless, vegetal-dyed banded style known today. The carded grey ground, produced by blending black and white fleece on the hand cards, is among the most consistent markers of the Crystal regional tradition across all of its periods. CONDITION

Good. Color saturation and structural integrity are strong across the woven field, with no holes or interior losses. All four corners show active fiber deterioration in the dark brown border — a well-documented consequence of iron-mordant dye corrosion in rugs of this period — with selvage cord damage at the corners and small stains throughout the field.
