Description

1966 Chevrolet Chevelle SS — 138-Code Super Sport

View High-Resolution Photos Here   Schedule Inspection / Showing

Overview

This is a documented 138-code Super Sport — VIN 138176A179603, New Mexico title in hand, no lien — acquired as a non-running shell in the 1990s and rebuilt from the frame up by a single enthusiast owner over more than a decade. The build was methodical: frame first, then drivetrain, then suspension, then body and interior. Every major system was replaced with named, receipted components. Purchase receipts span 2006 to 2022 and document over $20,000 in parts from verifiable vendors. Fewer than 500 miles have been driven since completion. The car runs, drives, shifts, idles, and starts. It is being sold as-is and is offered transparently — all known issues are disclosed below. Bidders are strongly encouraged to inspect in person. Live video walkthroughs are available upon request.

Engine & Drivetrain

The LS-1 6.0-liter cast iron block was sourced with approximately 40,000 miles and torn down for inspection — cylinder walls showed factory hatch marks at teardown, confirming minimal wear. It was rebuilt with new GM LS-3 aluminum heads (all new valves and springs), a takeoff LS-3 intake manifold with factory injectors and coils, and a FAST 90mm Big Mouth cable-throttle body. MSD handles ignition; a K&N cold air intake feeds the throttle body. The FAST EFI system is operational with a base map loaded and requires a final dyno tune to fully optimize fuel and ignition tables — the idle currently pulses as a result. Drive goes through a T-56 6-speed manual with hydraulic throwout bearing to a Moser 9" Ford rear end with Chevelle-matched brackets, a Posi carrier, and 4.11 gears. Power is transferred through a custom-built Dynotech DOM steel driveshaft (3.5" × .083" × 57.687"), high-speed balanced to the T-56 output. JEGS LS1/Chevelle-specific ceramic-coated headers feed a 2" dual exhaust with polished side-exit tips.

Frame & Undercarriage

Before the drivetrain went in, the frame was pulled from the body, sandblasted to bare metal, and boxed full-length with 1/8" steel plate. The undercarriage presents cleanly — black-coated floor pan, no visible rust, no leaks, all lines routed cleanly. Fuel delivery is handled by an Aeromotive Phantom in-tank fuel system with stainless lines to the injectors. Cooling is a Griffin heavy-duty aluminum radiator with an electric fan cycling automatically at 170°F. DEI floor and tunnel heat shields are installed throughout, with Boom Mat acoustic insulation for additional thermal and sound control.

  • Frame: Sandblasted — Boxed with 1/8" Steel Plate, Full Length
  • Floor Pan: Solid, Black-Coated — No Rust
  • Fuel System: Aeromotive Phantom In-Tank EFI — Stainless Lines
  • Radiator: Griffin Heavy-Duty Aluminum
  • Cooling Fan: Electric, Automatic — 170°F
  • Heat Shielding: DEI Floor and Tunnel Shields

Suspension & Brakes

Classic Performance Products handled the suspension from end to end. Up front: C6 Corvette spindles on CPP round-tube A-frames with a 1" spring drop and a CPP power steering gearbox. At the rear: CPP tubing cradles the Moser axle. Braking is four-wheel 13" disc with a CPP 4-disc power brake booster kit and heavy CPP sway bars front and rear. Pre-bent stainless brake lines replace all rubber lines front to rear.

  • Front Spindles: CPP C6 Corvette
  • Front A-Frames: CPP Round-Tube — 1" Spring Drop
  • Steering: CPP Power Steering Gearbox
  • Rear Cradle: CPP Tubing
  • Sway Bars: CPP Heavy-Duty, Front and Rear

  • Brake Booster: CPP 4-Disc Power Brake Booster Kit
  • Brake Lines: Pre-Bent Stainless, Front to Rear

Exterior

The body was removed from the frame and sent to a professional body shop where an extensive panel replacement program was carried out, documented by receipts. Replaced panels include: full left quarter, full right quarter, bare driver door, radiator support, rear window/trunk panel, right inner fenderwell, front dash kit, and trunk floor section — all sourced from Original Parts Group and specialty restoration suppliers. The car was then painted in its original Marina Blue in base coat/clear coat. All exterior trim is polished. New front and rear chrome bumpers were installed along with new headlights, taillights, and windshield. Wheels are 17" American Racing units designed to replicate the original SS steel wheel profile. Tires are new but do not meet current DOT age requirements.

Vintage Air AC is fully plumbed with an R134a system and has never been charged or connected to a refrigerant source. A Humphugger console is installed between the seats. An accessory switch panel is mounted below the dash center, functional but not fully concealed. The radio is not connected and no speakers are installed. Service and History

Single-owner build from a non-running 138-code shell purchased in the 1990s. Frame was pulled, sandblasted, and boxed before any mechanical work began. All major systems were replaced with new components during the build. Fewer than 500 miles on the completed car. The car is mechanically operational and road-driven but has not received final commissioning. Outstanding items for the next owner include: EFI dyno tune, speedometer calibration, AC charge, radio and speaker installation, turn signal diagnosis, and visor replacement. All tuning paperwork, wiring diagrams, and build receipts transfer with the vehicle.
