"The Cowboy" Frederic Remington Bronze— Marble Base, 40 Lbs
"The Cowboy" holds a singular place in American art: it is the only monumental bronze Remington ever completed, commissioned in 1905 by the Fairmount Park Art Association of Philadelphia and unveiled in 1908 as the capstone of a career that Theodore Roosevelt said would preserve the cowboy, soldier, and plainsman "for all time." This bronze after that composition captures every element that made Remington the undisputed master of Western sculpture — the horse caught mid-surge with flowing tail and tossing mane, the rider's controlled authority beneath his wide-brim hat, and the deeply modeled surface detail that distinguishes Remington's work from mere decorative casting.
At 40 pounds and 21 inches tall, the piece commands immediate presence. The worked surface renders every element with fidelity — tooled saddle, filled saddlebags, holstered sidearm, roweled spurs — and applied copper wire and leather reins thread through the bridle ring. The figure is mounted on a polished oval black marble base with white veining, 1.5 inches thick with a felt bottom, and the signature "Frederic Remington" appears cast into the underside.
CONDITION Excellent. No damage; the dark brown patina is rich and consistent across the bronze with strong surface integrity throughout.
