Description

Indonesian Bhoma Guardian Carved Wood Architectural Fragment

Hand-carved wooden architectural fragment depicting a fierce guardian face, likely inspired by Indonesian Bhoma/Boma or kala traditions of Bali and Java. These protective figures were historically placed above doorways and temple thresholds to ward off malevolent forces. The carving features bold, exaggerated elements—wide eyes, pronounced ears, and stylized teeth—set within a thick, sculptural frame that suggests it was originally part of a larger structural element rather than a wearable mask.

Crafted from solid wood approximately 1" thick, the piece shows a naturally aged surface with darker tones in the խոր recesses, enhancing its dramatic expression. Later-added mounting hardware allows for wall display, making it a compelling decorative artifact with cultural significance and strong visual presence.

Condition:
Good condition with age-appropriate wear. Surface shows expected scuffs, discoloration, and patina from use. A vertical crack at the lower center and minor marks and holes on the reverse are present. Newer mounting hardware has been added. Structurally solid and displays well.

Dimensions:
Overall: 9 1/4" x 10 1/4" x 4"
Weight: 4 lbs 12 oz
Soup can shown in photos for scale.
