Description

Vintage Matchbook Lot ~1,500 Pieces — Playboy Club, Disney & More

A remarkable collector's accumulation of approximately 1,600 vintage advertising matchbooks. Spanning roughly the 1950s through the 1990s, this collection reads as a who's who of mid-century American dining, lodging, and nightlife — many of them now gone forever.

Star highlights include the iconic Playboy Club, first opened in Chicago in 1960 and eventually expanding to over two dozen U.S. locations before the chain went defunct in 1991 — making original matchbooks from its heyday increasingly scarce collector's items. The Stardust Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas is another crown jewel: opened in 1958 as the world's largest hotel at the time, it closed in 2006 and was demolished in 2007, ensuring that any surviving Stardust memorabilia carries significant nostalgic and historical weight. The Golden Nugget Gambling Hall, Walt Disney World Holiday Inn, Tokyo Inn, Corvette Diner, Dino's Lounge, and Francisco Grande Motor Inn round out the highlights visible in the photographs — with the seller noting that images represent only a small fraction of the full 1,500-piece lot.

Matchbooks from defunct businesses are among the most desirable to collectors, particularly those reflecting specific eras, themes, or geographic regions — and this collection checks every one of those boxes. Large, well-curated collections that include rare and iconic pieces have sold for thousands of dollars at auction. With extraordinary depth across restaurants, motor lodges, casinos, and cocktail lounges, this lot represents a singular opportunity for the serious phillumenist or advertising ephemera dealer. The collection arrives in its original storage bin with lid, ready to catalog and explore.
