Description

1960s Fallout Shelter Sign — Original DOD Issue

Every American who grew up in the 1960s walked past one of these — and had already been taught what it meant. They'd practiced in classrooms, dropping beneath wooden desks at a teacher's signal, folding their arms over their heads the way Bert the Turtle showed them on the filmstrip. Duck and cover. By the time a child was old enough to read the words "FALLOUT SHELTER," they understood, in the wordless way children understand serious things, that the adults around them were genuinely afraid.

Running along the bottom edge in small yellow type: "DOD FS NO 1 · NOT TO BE REPRODUCED OR USED WITHOUT DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE PERMISSION."

The capacity circle marked "7" is what makes this example complete. A building inspector stood in a specific basement or stairwell, measured it, calculated the shielding factor, and decided that room could protect seven people. That number was pressed into this circle and has stayed there ever since — through the Cuban Missile Crisis, through the long decades of the Cold War, through the wall coming down, through whatever came after. The fear that made this sign necessary is history now. The sign itself is the proof it was real.

CONDITION Good. Graphics and text are bold and fully legible, and the yellow reflective surface retains its finish with no delamination.
