Indian Carved Mango Wood Hindu Shrine — Rajasthani Horse Heads, Sunburst
A traditional Indian household shrine (singhasan) hand-carved from mango wood and made in India. Pieces of this form held a prominent place in Hindu homes, serving as a raised altar for displaying a deity figure, with the open lower shelf providing storage for puja essentials such as incense and offerings. The scalloped and arched crest rail frames a boldly carved sunburst fan relief at the backboard center — a motif with deep roots in Rajasthani temple craft — while the inner arm brackets are carved in the round as horse heads, a signature decorative element of the Rajasthan region. Corner posts rise to turned ball finials, and four turned bulbous feet ground the platform above. The naturally bleached tone of the mango wood gives the piece a pale, warm presence that reads as easily contemporary as it does traditional.
The compact footprint and two-tier configuration adapt readily beyond their original devotional use — equally suited as a display stand, petite bookcase, or kitchen spice shelf.
CONDITION Good. Sturdy with no damage. Natural grain character, minor surface checking, and light handling patina are consistent with mango wood of this age.
