Lionel No. 254 O Gauge Electric Locomotive Set — New York Central Lines
This four-piece Lionel O Gauge passenger train set centers on the No. 254 electric locomotive, produced 1924–1932 and styled after the electric engines operating on the New York Central's electrified commuter lines out of Grand Central Terminal. The pressed-steel cab-style engine is finished in olive khaki with a black frame, brass-tone hardware, and a gold-painted cab door panel bearing "Lionel" and "254" medallions, flanked by decorative winged wheel castings along the frame. The underside retains the original "The Lionel Co., New York" data plate — the pre-1929 corporate name — while two of the three passenger cars carry "The Lionel Corporation" markings, indicating the pieces span Lionel's 1929 corporate name transition and were likely drawn from adjacent production runs. All three passenger cars are pressed steel in the matching olive khaki finish with maroon-painted window surrounds and embossed "New York Central Lines" lettering, a deliberate co-branding Lionel used throughout this era to connect families to trains they actually rode.
The lot includes the No. 254 locomotive, two Pullman coaches, and one Observation car. The Observation car retains its ornate cast brass open-platform railing — the most fragile element of any set of this type and frequently missing — making its survival intact a meaningful distinction. Two of the three passenger cars retain their original Lionel Corporation lubrication instruction cards affixed to the underside.
CONDITION
Good. The pressed-steel bodies hold their original olive khaki finish overall, with maroon window detail remaining legible on all cars. Paint loss is scattered across the roof and sides of all three passenger cars, ranging from minor chips to moderate flaking; one car end shows significant paint peeling down to bare metal at the lower corners. The locomotive roof exhibits active rust and surface corrosion across a broad area of the cab top.
