Hungarian Folk Art Chess Set — Pyrography, Copper Inlay, Folding Storage Board
A complete hand-crafted Hungarian or Eastern European folk art chess set featuring 32 turned and carved pieces in two tones — light natural and amber-stained — with copper inlay accents and dense pyrography throughout. The geometric decoration, including chevron, scallop, basket-weave, and diamond lattice motifs burned across every surface, is characteristic of a regional craft tradition in which intricate pyrography on everyday objects carried cultural significance dating to the 19th century and continued through workshop export production of the mid-to-late 20th century.
The lot includes all 32 pieces and a matching hinged two-panel board decorated with the same folk motifs across its playing surface, border, and apron. The board folds in half and latches closed to store the pieces inside, with coordinate notation (A–H, 1–8) along both axes.
CONDITION Good. Pyrography and copper inlay decoration remain crisp and visually strong throughout. Felt bottoms are separating from the bases on multiple pieces.
