Description

Vintage Mexican Baúl Wedding Chest on Spindle Stand — Blue Paint, Iron Lock

A Mexican pine baúl, or wedding chest, finished in layered blue-green paint now worn to bare wood across much of the surface, revealing bold pine grain beneath. The lid carries a carved bead molding along its front edge and a central iron escutcheon with keyhole; three iron strap hinges span the back. Dovetailed corner construction is visible on the exterior panels. The form, hardware, and patina are consistent with Mexican folk art production of the 1930s.

The chest seats into a separate matching stand with four turned legs, a lower turned spindle gallery, and shaped side rails — all carrying the same blue paint. The two pieces separate for transport or independent display.

CONDITION
Good. The paint surface shows heavy loss throughout the trunk exterior, with bare pine exposed on most panels; the stand retains more of the original blue. A wood repair is present along the back lid rail at the hinge line, and the interior floor shows scattered paint drips and dark staining. Key absent.
