Bunting Co. Art Deco Aluminum Rocker & Chair Set — Pink Vinyl
A superb matched pair of Streamline Moderne lounge chairs by the J.R. Bunting Company (Bunting Glider Co.) of Philadelphia, PA — one rocking chair and one stationary chair — dating to circa 1940s–1950s. Bunting was among America's most prolific mid-century metal furniture manufacturers, filing over 30 design patents at the height of their postwar output, and their aluminum pieces are among the most sought-after in the vintage American porch furniture category.
The frames are constructed of continuous-bend aluminum tubing with a satin-brushed finish on the tubular elements and a distinctive silver hammertone finish on the flat, tapered armrests — a hallmark detail of authentic Bunting production. The extruded aluminum seat rails on both chairs bear the embossed maker's mark "BUNTING CO. INC. PHILA., PA.," providing confident attribution without reliance on paper labels or secondary documentation. The gracefully curved cantilever rocker base and the matching stationary base share the same fluid, architectural silhouette that places these chairs squarely in the Art Deco / Streamline Moderne design tradition.
Most surviving Bunting examples have lost or replaced their original upholstery — making this set's intact blush pink vinyl cushions a genuine rarity. Both seat and back cushions are original, in a warm blush pink with contrast piping and zipper closures that allow for easy removal and cleaning. The cushions retain their shape and padding. Collectors of American streamline design, mid-century porch furniture, or 1940s–50s interiors will find this a cohesive and authentically preserved set. See the Condition section for a full account of wear.
CONDITION Good overall — both frames are sturdy, fully functional, and retain their handsome Streamline form without bending or structural compromise. The aluminum shows finish wear and loss along the seat rail edges with surface scratching on the tubing, and oxidation is present on several of the brass-tone fastening bolts. The original blush pink vinyl cushions display light surface crazing and fading consistent with age, with soiling concentrated along the seam edges and on the underside of the rocker's seat cushion.
