Webster Sterling Silver Reticulated Salt Cellars, Cobalt Glass — Set of 5
Before salt shakers, there were salt cellars — one at each place setting, a small spoon alongside, a mark of the well-appointed American table from the mid-19th century through the early 20th. These five sterling silver examples feature reticulated lattice sidewalls pierced in a repeating oval and hexagonal pattern, with removable cobalt glass liners that protected the silver from salt's corrosive nature and let that electric blue burn through the lacework like stained glass. They are marked STERLING with the Webster Company maker's mark — Webster being one of North Attleboro's most respected silver houses of the era.
Five settings, five guests — and these translate effortlessly to the table today. Use them for salt, dips, olives, or condiments; float a tea light inside each liner for an instant centerpiece; line them on a windowsill and let the light do the work. All five cobalt glass liners are present and removable.
CONDITION Good overall; silver retains solid structure with crisp definition to the pierced pattern. Tarnish is present throughout — polishing will restore surface brightness. No damage to any of the five glass liners.
