Navajo Chinle Handwoven Wool Rug c.1960s Vegetal Dye
Mid-20th century Navajo handwoven wool rug in the Chinle regional style, dating to approximately the 1960s–1970s. The textile features the traditional horizontal banded composition associated with Chinle weaving, displaying repeating serrated diamond and lightning motifs in ivory and muted blue-gray set within warm golden-tan bands. Narrow accent stripes frame the patterned fields, creating a balanced geometric design characteristic of Southwestern Navajo textiles.
Chinle rugs developed in the early 20th century around the Chinle Trading Post in Arizona and drew inspiration from earlier Navajo blanket traditions emphasizing horizontal layouts and repeating geometric forms. This example reflects that tradition with a tightly woven wool tapestry construction and a subdued palette created with vegetal dyes and natural wool colors. The rug demonstrates a fine weave and careful craftsmanship typical of mid-century Navajo weaving.
Suitable for use as a floor rug, wall hanging, or decorative Southwestern textile, this piece represents a classic example of Navajo Chinle design from the mid-20th century.
