Navajo Chinle Handwoven Wool Rug Vegetal Dye
Handwoven Navajo Chinle style wool rug dating to approximately 1980–2000, featuring the traditional horizontal banded design characteristic of Chinle weaving. The rug displays repeating geometric diamond and cross motifs in black, ivory, and warm brown tones, arranged across alternating bands of natural wool. The subdued earth-tone palette reflects the use of vegetal dyes and natural wool colors, giving the textile a warm and organic appearance typical of Southwestern Navajo weaving.
The Chinle style originated in the early 20th century around the Chinle Trading Post in Arizona and was inspired by earlier Navajo blanket traditions emphasizing horizontal banding and restrained natural colors. This piece demonstrates those hallmarks with balanced geometric motifs and a tightly woven wool tapestry construction.
Versatile in use, the rug works well as a floor covering, wall hanging, or decorative textile. Its classic Southwestern design makes it a strong accent for rustic, Western, or contemporary interiors and a representative example of late 20th-century Navajo weaving tradition.
Condition:
Good condition overall with visible wear consistent with age and use. There are scattered areas of staining and discoloration within the field, along with noticeable wear along the edges and minor fraying at the corners. Some loose fibers and edge wear are present. The weave remains intact and the rug displays well. Please review photos for full condition details.
