Description

Jane Mabry's West — Limited Edition Print Portfolio, 10 Charcoal Prints

Jane Mabry's West is a limited edition folio of ten charcoal-on-kraft-paper prints by Jane Mabry, a distinguished Southwestern artist whose deep personal ties to New Mexico shaped her singular access to Pueblo and Navajo subjects. Each print is executed in richly contrasted black charcoal on warm tan kraft board, with Mabry's distinctive cross-and-signature mark in the lower corner. Subjects span intimate portraits to dynamic Western action scenes. The portfolio is accompanied by a typed title sheet and supplemental artist biography. This is a cohesive, documentarily significant body of work that will appeal to collectors of Southwestern art, admirers of the Taos and Santa Fe school tradition, and students of mid-century American regionalism. Please refer to the Condition section for specific notes on wear.

Prints included:

  • Zuni Water Carrier
  • The Bronc Rider
  • Taos Pueblo Drummer
  • Hosteen Marcus, Navajo
  • Cowboy at Sundown
  • Navajo Child
  • Cowboy at the Rodeo
  • The Medicine Man, Navajo
  • Navajo Mother and Child
  • Maria, the Potter of San Ildefonso Pueblo

CONDITION

Good. The individual prints display pleasing contrast and tonal stability, with toning present across the set consistent with the age of the kraft-paper support. The folio cover shows the most significant wear, with tears throughout the edges and corners as visible in the cover photos; buyers should anticipate handling the prints independently of the folder. No tears or losses to the print surfaces are apparent in the photos. The typed title sheet is intact.

DIMENSIONS

Each print: 11" × 14"

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Jane Mabry (b. c. 1911, Roswell, New Mexico) was an oil painter and pastellist specializing in Southwestern subjects, particularly New Mexican Pueblo and Navajo peoples. She earned her BFA from the University of New Mexico, then studied for four years under Gerald Cassidy, the noted Indian painter from Santa Fe. She subsequently trained at the Corcoran School in Washington, D.C. under Catherine Critcher — the only woman member of the Taos Founders group — and attended the Art Students League in New York City. During her time in Washington she painted landscapes for the National Park Service. Returning to New Mexico, she concentrated on portraiture, producing a sustained series documenting native costumes and environments. She is listed in Who's Who in American Art, was a member of the Pastel Society of America, and was represented by and part owner of Galeria Del Sol in Albuquerque.
