Description

Navajo Sand Painting "Whirling Logs" — Loretta Begay, Shiprock NM

This framed Navajo sand painting titled "Whirling Logs" is a ceremonial composition rooted in the Diné healing tradition, signed on the verso by Loretta Begay of Shiprock, New Mexico — a community in the Four Corners region of the Navajo Nation long recognized as a primary center of sand painting production. The inscription on the back identifies it as a Navajo sand painting made from natural color sandstones, affirming the use of traditional crushed mineral pigments applied to a particle board ground.

The composition centers on the Whirling Log motif — a quartered cross in deep brown and teal extending from a black circular hub — derived from the Nightway (Yéii Bicheii) healing ceremony, one of the most significant nine-night Diné healing chants. The crossed logs represent the point where two rivers meet in the ceremonial origin story, and the design was traditionally created by a medicine man on the floor of the hogan with the patient seated at the center, the spinning motion intended to restore balance and health. Eight Yei figures (Holy People) populate the ends of the four logs, rendered in terracotta, teal, ochre, black, and white with feathered headdresses and ceremonial regalia — four male figures with round masks and four female with square masks, as the iconographic tradition dictates. Talking God and House God figures anchor the composition's cardinal positions, while cornstalk and plant motifs arc through the interior circle and feathered guardian elements occupy each corner of the sand field. The warm sandstone ground against teal, rust, and ivory pigments demonstrates the precision the medium demands. A quadruple mat in cream, blush, teal, and terracotta frames the work within a solid wood frame with a pronounced molding profile. The piece is unglazed, allowing the natural texture of the sand surface to read directly.

Collectors of Southwest Native American art, Navajo ceremonial and ethnographic works, and mid-to-late 20th-century folk art will find this a meaningful acquisition. The Whirling Logs design carries deep ceremonial resonance within the Nightway tradition and integrates naturally into interiors favoring Southwestern, organic, or earth-tone aesthetics. Please refer to the Condition section for a full account of the piece's present state.

CONDITION

Good. The sand painting surface is intact with no visible loss, lifting, or displacement of sand across the composition, and colors remain vivid throughout. A pea-sized stain is present at the top center of the matting, and wear to the matting is visible along the left side. The solid wood frame is structurally sound with light handling wear consistent with age.
