Description

Judith Durr Print — Kachina, Navajo Rug Still Life, Choctaw Artist

A richly detailed Southwest still life print by Judith Durr — internationally recognized Choctaw/Cherokee Native American artist, member of Western Artists of America, and a painter whose work is held in museum, corporate, and private collections worldwide. Durr is known for her signature approach of composing First People's still life scenes using her own extensive collection of artifacts, Navajo rugs, pottery, and beadwork, painting from life with layered glazes to achieve a near-trompe-l'oeil realism that draws directly from her heritage and her late mother's beadwork tradition.

This print exemplifies that signature style. A Hopi Kachina doll commands the center — blue mask with red ear pieces and a round nose, full feathered headdress, and layered ceremonial garments in terra cotta and red with geometric-patterned textile detail — set before a bold Navajo-style rug in deep crimson, black, and ivory that serves as both backdrop and foreground surface. Flanking the figure are unfurled ears of Indian corn with pale husks, a strand of robin's-egg blue heishi-style beads, and a matte black Pueblo pottery vessel, every element rendered with the tactile precision Durr's collectors prize. The print is signed in the lower left.

Durr's oil paintings reflect her mother's inspirational beadwork and her family's collection of Navajo rugs and that personal connection comes through clearly in the careful attention paid to each object in the composition. This piece appeals to collectors of Southwest and Western American art, admirers of Hopi and Navajo material culture, and interior designers working in Santa Fe, Territorial, or American West aesthetics. The presentation — custom triple matting in peach and coral behind glass, set in a substantial black and gold gallery molding — is installation-ready.

CONDITION

Good. The print displays strong, unfaded color and the frame and triple matting are structurally intact. Debris is present behind the glass, visible upon close inspection, and would require disassembly of the frame to fully address.
