c.1890 Dongbei Chinese Painted Cabinet – Turquoise Lacquer, 23"
Antique painted cabinet from the Dongbei region of northeastern China, dating to circa 1890. Constructed in solid pine wood with traditional joinery, this late Qing-period piece features a striking turquoise lacquer finish over earlier red and brown layers, revealing a richly textured surface developed through more than a century of wear. The twin doors are fitted with circular bronze ring pulls, opening to a dark-stained interior with one removable shelf.
Dongbei furniture is celebrated for its bold colors and rustic authenticity, reflecting the vernacular craftsmanship of northern village workshops. The present cabinet exemplifies these qualities with its aged patina, simple structure, and enduring stability—an evocative decorative accent equally suited to collectors of Asian antiques and contemporary interiors seeking authentic texture and color.
Condition:
Good antique condition with pronounced surface wear, flaking, and layered paint loss consistent with age and original finish. Stable and structurally sound, with a removable interior shelf. The weathered surface and natural imperfections contribute to its character and historical appeal.
