Description

150 lb Petrified Conifer Log — Triassic Period Fossil

Exceptional petrified conifer log from the Triassic Period, measuring 21 inches across and weighing approximately 150 lbs. This large and visually striking specimen reveals finely preserved growth rings, grain structure, and mineral banding in hues of russet, ochre, gray, and cream. Formed over 225 million years ago, the original wood was buried and infused with silica-rich groundwater, its organic tissues gradually replaced by quartz, chalcedony, and jasper, resulting in a complete stone replica of the ancient tree.

The coloration reflects trace minerals—iron oxides creating warm red and yellow tones, manganese adding darker shades—capturing the dynamic geochemical environment of its fossilization. Petrified wood from this era offers both scientific and aesthetic appeal, serving as an important record of early conifer forests that thrived when dinosaurs first appeared. A museum-quality example suitable for natural history display, fine interior décor, or serious fossil collections.

Condition

Very good natural condition with stable structure and visible surface fissures typical of fossilization. Minor weathering present, but coloration and detail remain strong throughout.
