19th C. Carved Sandstone Boundary Marker – From a Surveyor’s Collection
A 19th-century carved sandstone boundary marker, rectangular in form with a rounded top and faint tooled borders along each face. Hewn from reddish-brown sandstone, this solid post was originally used to delineate property or survey boundaries—an enduring relic of early land division practices. A later iron hoop remains secured at the center, showing subsequent use as a hitching post during its working life.
Provenanced from the private collection of a local surveyor active in the mid-20th century, this example reflects the enduring intersection between practical surveying and early civic infrastructure. Comparable examples are marketed today as architectural antiques or garden features, valued for their sculptural simplicity, authentic tool marks, and natural patina. Whether displayed as a historic artifact or as a commanding garden accent, it embodies both the history and craftsmanship of 19th-century fieldwork.
Condition:
In good antique condition with age-consistent weathering, surface wear, and minor chipping along edges and base. The iron hoop exhibits stable oxidation and remains firmly attached. The stone surface retains its natural patina and mineral color variation, contributing to its historical and decorative appeal.
