Antique Horse-Drawn Farm Wagon — Circa 1900, Restored with Original Lumber
A magnificent survivor from the twilight of the horse-drawn era, this American farm wagon was crafted around 1900, at the crossroads of 19th-century tradition and early 20th-century innovation. Constructed of wood and iron, the wagon retains its original lumber, reinforced with period machine-forged fittings and standardized carriage bolts typical of turn-of-the-century production. The box is painted a deep green, set upon a crimson undercarriage with brilliant yellow wheels—colors emblematic of factory-finished wagons from the early industrial farm period. Each of the four 50.5-inch iron-rimmed wheels, with 16 precisely turned spokes, reveals the mastery of the wheelwright’s art, while the full-length wooden tongue (drawpole) extends forward for hitching a horse or mule team.
Designed for hauling grain, hay, and tools across rough terrain, wagons of this type represented the backbone of American agriculture between 1880 and 1925—combining the craftsmanship of rural makers with the efficiency of industrial hardware. Its robust fifth-wheel steering gear, iron-braced chassis, and symmetrical box construction speak to a time when wagon builders perfected the balance between durability and grace. Today, its bold colors and historic form make it an exceptional centerpiece for collectors, historic farms, or museum display.
Condition:
Very good. Structurally sound with original lumber intact. Paint is restored in period-correct colors (not original) and shows mild wear consistent with age. Iron components display light oxidation but remain strong. Wheels turn freely; the chassis is solid for static display.
