Antique Herring-Hall-Marvin Co. Hand-Painted Safe – Charpiot Safe Co., Denver

A monumental example of late 19th–early 20th century American safe design, this maker-marked Herring-Hall-Marvin Co. hand-painted safe unites industrial strength with remarkable artistic craftsmanship. Built with 6.5-inch-thick steel sides and doors and mounted on 6.5-inch cast-iron casters, it features elaborate gold pinstriping, scrollwork, and hand-painted pastoral vignettes—each detail reflecting the era’s blend of security and beauty.

Manufactured by Herring-Hall-Marvin Co., one of the nation’s foremost safe and vault makers, this example was retailed by Charpiot Safe Co. of Denver, Colorado, with additional markings for A.L. Deane & Co., Chicago & Denver, its regional distributor. Charpiot’s name ties this piece to Denver’s booming turn-of-the-century banking and mining trade, when safes like this guarded fortunes of the American West.

The interior includes nine compartments, three drawers, and one locking compartment, all retaining their original hardware. It comes with its tested working combination and keys for internal compartments; the combination lock operates reliably.

Condition:
Good antique condition overall, showing scratches, scuffing, oxidation, and finish wear consistent with age and use. Some chipped paint, minor overspray, and scattered surface losses. Decorative artwork remains vivid and visually striking. Clean interior with age-appropriate patina.
