Description

Antique Black-Painted Cannonball Rope Bed — Country Empire, Full Size

A solid wood full-size cannonball bed in the American Country Empire tradition, dating to approximately 1840–1870 and retaining its original black-painted surface throughout. Four boldly turned posts — each crowned with a large ball finial above a vase-shaped collar, a hallmark of country Sheraton and Empire turning — anchor the shaped, scrolled headboard and lower matching footboard. The style is a vernacular expression of high-style Federal and Empire furniture produced by regional craftsmen across the American Northeast and Midwest during the mid-19th century, when lathe-turned beds of this type were made in quantity for farmhouse and modest domestic interiors. The original black paint — likely milk paint, the period-correct coating for American country furniture of this era — has developed a richly mottled patina over nearly two centuries, with warm amber wood showing through at points of honest wear. This kind of authentic, unrestored painted surface is precisely what serious collectors of American country and primitive furniture seek, as it cannot be reproduced.

Originally constructed as a rope bed, the original rope pegs remain intact on the interior rail faces — a significant structural detail confirming the frame's authenticity and the full reversibility of the mattress conversion. Nail-studded ledger boards were added inside the rails to create a platform supporting a full mattress, leaving the underlying period structure entirely undisturbed. A canvas sacking-bottom support panel remains fitted to the platform. A small brass identification plate is affixed to one rail interior. Collectors of American country and primitive furniture, painted surface enthusiasts, and interior designers working in a rustic, Americana, or folk aesthetic will find this an authoritative and structurally coherent period piece. It functions equally well dressed as a primary bedroom bed or a guest room anchor. See Condition for specifics.

CONDITION

Fair. The frame is complete with all posts, rails, headboard, footboard, and original rope pegs present. Paint loss with chipping, scratching, and scuffing is widespread across all surfaces — most pronounced on the finials, post faces, and side rails — with warm amber wood showing through at points of wear consistent with age and use. Three of the four rail screws are original but have stripped threads and do not hold reliably; one screw is a modern replacement, and a buyer should plan to address the rail joinery before use as a sleeping bed.
