Artisan Catrina Statues in Painted Clay — Día de los Muertos Remembrance
Celebrate the rich artistry of Día de los Muertos with this pair of hand-painted Catrina figures, each crafted from traditional Mexican clay. Inspired by José Guadalupe Posada’s iconic La Calavera Catrina, these skeletal ladies are more than decorative — they’re symbols of cultural pride, satire, and remembrance.
The taller figure wears a deep blue gown with silver trim and a sweeping feathered hat adorned with a white flower, while her companion stuns in a ruffled lavender dress with burgundy details. Both feature removable heads, a detail found in finer handmade examples of this beloved folk tradition. Their elongated forms, expressive skeletal features, and vibrant colors are characteristic of artisan Catrina sculptures found in markets across Mexico, particularly around Day of the Dead.
Whether displayed seasonally or year-round, these figures honor Mexican heritage and craftsmanship in a playful yet meaningful way — a tribute to the joyful defiance of death that defines Día de los Muertos.
Condition:
Good vintage condition. The taller blue Catrina has a chipped leaf on her hat (see close-up), but no other damage is present. Both figures show minor surface wear typical of handmade painted clay pieces. Please refer to photos for full visual reference. (Soup can shown for scale.)
