Globe-Stimpson Model 81 Electric Computing Scale — Louisville KY, 30 lb Capacity
This vintage Globe-Stimpson Model 81 electric computing scale was manufactured by Stimpson Computing Scale Co., Inc., Louisville, Kentucky — a division of Globe Slicing Machine Co. Made in the U.S.A., this commercial-grade model represents the postwar evolution of Stimpson’s long line of precision computing scales, first developed from patents by Walter F. Stimpson in the late 19th century. Combining robust functionality with streamlined mid-century industrial design, it features a white enameled steel housing, green-and-chrome Globe-Stimpson badge, and front viewing window with “One Cent Graduations.”
Operated on 110 volts / 60 watts and rated for 30 pounds, this scale would have been used in grocery, deli, or butcher shops to compute pricing by weight — a hallmark of mid-20th-century American retail equipment. The embossed manufacturer’s plates and toggle switch retain their original character, making this an appealing piece for collectors of vintage trade instruments, industrial décor, or American manufacturing history.
Condition
Good overall condition with scuffs, marks, and other signs of previous use. Enamel shows minor chipping and surface wear. The cord is aged with cracked insulation and should be replaced before operation. As with all vintage scales, calibration is recommended for optimal performance. Solidly constructed and heavy, with authentic patina consistent with its age and industrial use.
