Description

Santa Clara Blackware by Dolorita & Acoma Miniature by Robert Patricio — Signed Pueblo Pair

A compelling pair of signed Native American pottery pieces, this lot bridges two iconic Pueblo traditions: the bold elegance of Santa Clara blackware and the precise geometry of Acoma polychrome—each echoing centuries of artistry, story, and spirit.

The first is a hand-coiled, stone-polished blackware bowl by Dolorita of Santa Clara Pueblo, carved with the ancient Avanyu—a water serpent believed to bring rain and protect natural balance. Its deeply incised form shimmers beneath the traditional black-on-black firing technique, unique to the Tewa potters of Santa Clara. Signed “Dolorita, Santa Clara Pueblo,” this piece likely stems from the esteemed Tafoya or Gutierrez family, whose influence helped shape the global legacy of Pueblo pottery.

Complementing it is a jewel-like miniature by Robert Patricio (b. 1973) of Acoma Pueblo, signed “R. Acoma, NM.” Patricio is among Acoma’s most celebrated living potters, known for reviving ancestral motifs from ancient potsherds found in the mesa hills of Haak’u (Sky City). His work features extraordinarily fine linework and sacred geometric patterning—precise, rhythmic, and deeply tied to nature and ceremony. Despite its size, this miniature speaks volumes about Patricio’s craftsmanship and cultural stewardship.

Condition:
The Santa Clara bowl is in fair condition, with surface irregularities, shelf wear, and imperfections to the finish consistent with age and traditional use. The Acoma miniature is in good condition with no notable flaws; the painted designs remain sharp and intact. Please refer to photos for close-up views.
