Marie Sheppard Navajo Raised Design Textile – Wool Runner, 46”
This finely handwoven Navajo raised design textile by Marie Sheppard exemplifies the technical mastery and artistic depth of contemporary Diné weaving. Crafted in wool with a 14-warp x 8-weft count, it features bold diamond and stepped motifs rendered in burnt orange, ochre, olive green, and black on a neutral beige ground. The raised outline technique gives the pattern a subtle three-dimensional texture, achieved through meticulous tension control and double-weave construction. Both ends are finished with hand-twisted cords and intact selvedges, allowing it to serve beautifully as either a wall hanging or table runner.
Marie Sheppard is recognized among Navajo master weavers for her exceptional skill in the raised design style—a demanding method that may yield only inches of weaving after hours of labor. Her work has been exhibited in juried Native art shows such as the Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial and featured in reputable Native art galleries. Collectors prize her textiles for their precision, warmth, and the way they bridge traditional weaving and contemporary artistry.
Condition:
Good condition overall, with no remarkable damage, odors, tears, or soiling. The selvedge remains even and strong, and colors are vibrant with only minor wear consistent with careful handling.
