Hopi Double-Sided Painted Tableta with Bear Paw & Cloud Motifs
Painted in bold hues of turquoise, red, yellow, black, and white, this hand-carved Hopi tableta captures the living rhythm of ceremony and prayer. Fashioned of wood and bound with twine, it would once have crowned the head of a young Hopi woman during the Corn or Butterfly Dance—celebrations that honor life-giving rain, renewal, and the delicate harmony between earth and sky.
On both faces, stepped terraces rise like clouds; lightning bolts descend to awaken the land; and along the lower edge, powerful bear paw motifs appear—symbols of protection, strength, and the grounding presence of the Bear Clan. Each brushstroke speaks to a cosmology in motion: rain that nourishes corn, spirit that sustains life.
Condition
Good overall condition with age-appropriate wear, scuffing, and visible cracking to the wood, particularly along the raised lightning motifs. Feathers now absent. Surface retains vivid color and strong design integrity.
Materials
Wood, twine/string, hand-painted, double-sided.
