Antique Peugeot Frères Coffee Grinder – Wood & Iron, France c.1900
Antique Peugeot Frères coffee grinder, made in Valentigney, Doubs, France, circa 1900. Constructed from dovetailed beechwood with a tongue-and-groove drawer, it features a cast iron grinding dome embossed with the Peugeot lion and the original brass maker’s plaque, “Peugeot Frères, Valentigney Doubs.” The curved iron crank with turned wooden handle operates smoothly, powering the original burr mechanism.
Founded in 1810, Peugeot Frères began as a family steel foundry before becoming renowned for its precision-engineered mills. The company’s lion trademark, registered in 1858, became a lasting emblem of quality—later carried into the Peugeot automobile brand. Early wooden and iron mills like this one represent the height of 19th-century French craftsmanship and are now prized by collectors worldwide.
A beautiful and functional example of French industrial design, suitable for display or light use in a vintage kitchen or café setting.
Condition
Good overall condition, showing age-appropriate wear and light restoration. The wooden case displays a refreshed finish with natural surface marks; the drawer front has been reworked or replaced. The iron dome retains legible markings and mild oxidation consistent with age. Grinder mechanism turns freely and remains operational.
