John Coltrane “Coltrane” 1962 Impulse! AS-21 Stereo LP, Van Gelder, Gatefold Original
Original 1962 U.S. stereo pressing of Coltrane (Impulse! AS-21), featuring the legendary John Coltrane Quartet with McCoy Tyner (piano), Jimmy Garrison (bass), and Elvin Jones (drums). Recorded at Rudy Van Gelder’s Englewood Cliffs studio and produced by Bob Thiele, this release captures Coltrane at a pivotal creative moment between My Favorite Things and A Love Supreme. Includes “Out of This World,” “Soul Eyes,” “Tunji (Toon-Gee),” and “Miles’ Mode.”
Issued on the classic orange-and-black Impulse! stereo label, with “Van Gelder” etching in the runout denoting an early mastering. Housed in the original laminated gatefold jacket designed by Robert Flynn/Viceroy, with striking blue-toned photography by Pete Turner and liner notes by Bob Thiele. This is among the most collectible early Impulse! titles, highly regarded for both sonic quality and historical importance.
Condition
Vinyl presents in VG condition, showing consistent surface scuffing and light hairlines under strong light, with light dulling from handling but no deep scratches. Labels are clean and bright. Gatefold sleeve graded VG, showing moderate ring wear, light edge rubbing, and mild foxing to interior panels. Spine and seams remain solid and legible. An honest, well-cared-for example that plays respectably and remains visually appealing.
