Luterma Bentwood Rocking Chair — Art Nouveau Pressed Back, Marked Estonian
Crafted in the early 20th century by Luterma, one of Estonia’s most esteemed bentwood manufacturers, this rocking chair is a beautiful marriage of Art Nouveau elegance and Baltic craftsmanship. Luterma—originally founded as A.M. Luther in 1877—rose to international prominence after Thonet’s bentwood patents expired, earning its place among Europe's premier plywood furniture producers. Their stamped mark, “FABRIQUÉ EN ESTONIE – LUTERMA,” proudly adorns the back panel of this piece, affirming its authentic origin.
This rocker showcases steam-bent arms, a solid wood frame, and a richly detailed pressed seat and back. The top rail is hand-carved with floral and foliate motifs, while traditional nailhead trim secures the contoured panels. Turned 2" front legs and double stretchers provide structure, stability, and charm. The back panel features a spectacular Art Nouveau fan-and-scroll motif—ornamental, organic, and strikingly symmetrical.
Whether admired for its sculptural silhouette or its place in design history, this chair is more than seating—it’s a conversation piece, a collector’s treasure, and a testament to the enduring artistry of Baltic furniture.
Condition:
In good condition with age-appropriate signs of use. Expect scuffing, finish wear/loss, and visible surface marks throughout. One rocker runner shows a split, and evidence of an old restoration is present. Despite cosmetic wear, the piece remains sturdy and structurally sound. See photos for detail.
