Description

Michele Menotti “Hopi Cape 1865” – Signed Serigraph 31/37

A bold and culturally resonant limited edition serigraph by American printmaker Michele Menotti, Hopi Cape 1865 interprets the traditional woven patterns of Hopi ceremonial garments through a vivid modern lens. This work is pencil-signed by the artist lower right and numbered 31 of just 37 impressions in the edition.

The design features repeated cross motifs in vibrant red, yellow, and black, framed by a stepped border at top and bottom that evokes the skyline of a desert village. The composition reflects the sacred geometry and balanced rhythm found in 19th-century Hopi textiles while asserting its place in 20th-century modernist printmaking.

Professionally matted and housed in a sleek silver-tone metal frame, this piece is ready to hang and display. It is part of Menotti’s acclaimed “Indian Blanket” series—an artistic tribute to the visual language of Indigenous weaving traditions.

Artist Biography – Michele Menotti

Michele Menotti is an American artist known for a series of silkscreen prints reimagining historic Native American blankets. Active in the late 20th century, she produced signed, limited-edition works that translate Navajo and Hopi textile motifs into bold, graphic compositions. Her editions typically include 35 to 40 prints and are often titled with the year of the original textile reference.

Her work—featuring titles such as Chief Blanket 1880, Child’s Blanket 1885, and Hopi Cape 1865—is distinguished by its clean lines, vibrant palettes, and cultural sensitivity. Though biographical records are sparse, Menotti’s prints have become collectible for their striking visual presence and respectful engagement with Indigenous design traditions.
