Description

AT&SF Railway Embossed Oil Can with Lid & Spout — Early 20th C. Tin

A genuine early 20th century railroad oil can marked “AT&SF RY” on the underside, denoting its use by the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway. Constructed from black-painted tin with a threaded filler opening, spout, and a chain-secured lid, this can was likely used in railroad mechanical shops or by maintenance crews for carrying oil or kerosene. It features a sturdy bail handle and rear grip for controlled pouring, and includes an internal mesh filter just inside the neck—typical of service cans meant to protect machinery from debris.

This utilitarian vessel reflects the industrial craftsmanship of the steam and early diesel era, when railroads maintained in-house servicing operations for locomotives and rolling stock. The oval base and embossed railroad initials affirm its authenticity and connection to one of the most storied railroads in American history. Pieces like this are prized in the railroadiana collector’s market for their historical utility and visual character.
