Description

Iron Quail Sculpture on Sandstone Base — 17.5" Folk Art

This signed iron sculpture features a stylized quail silhouette mounted on a solid block of natural sandstone. The quail is cut from iron with subtle feather etching and a signature curled plume, evoking the distinct profile of the California quail. Its dark patina complements the warm, layered striations of the sandstone base, creating a striking contrast of industrial and organic textures.

The piece is signed on the underside of the stone in script, likely identifying a regional artisan—possibly “Craig” or similar—though not yet confirmed. This work is consistent with handcrafted folk or garden art commonly found in the American Southwest, often created by local metalsmiths or studio craftsmen. The scale and visual appeal make it suitable for indoor décor, outdoor garden display, or collectors of regional folk sculpture.

Condition:

In good condition with clear signs of outdoor use. The iron shows weathering and light surface oxidation typical of garden exposure, while the sandstone base remains structurally sound with natural surface variations and tooling marks visible on the reverse.
