Klagetoh Navajo Rug by Mary Apache — Blue Gap AZ, Handwoven Wool, Tagged
Handwoven by Navajo weaver Mary Apache of Blue Gap, Arizona, this rug is a textbook example of the Klagetoh style, featuring a classic central diamond design and stepped borders in a tight, balanced composition. Rendered in natural gray, red, black, and ivory wool, the layout and color placement are consistent with early and mid-20th century Klagetoh-region weavings.
Woven entirely by hand on a traditional upright loom, the piece is constructed of hand-spun wool and demonstrates strong symmetry, a steady weft, and saturated vegetal and aniline dyes. It retains its original Butler’s Gallup, NM tag, noting the maker’s name and retail price of $1800. Butler’s was a long-established trading post known for representing authentic Navajo weavings and regional Native American art.
The Klagetoh style is closely related to Ganado rugs, but is distinguished by its gray field, where the central motif stands in strong relief. This piece presents well and would be suitable for floor use, wall display, or textile collection.
Condition
Good overall. One edge shows visible fading, with a corresponding area visible on the reverse side. No holes, tears, or odors. Wool remains structurally sound and the rug lies flat.
