Description

Picture Maker of the Old West – William H. Jackson, 1947 Bonanza Edition

A richly illustrated volume chronicling the extraordinary life and work of William Henry Jackson (1843–1942), one of America’s foremost photographers and explorers of the 19th-century frontier. Picture Maker of the Old West was written by Clarence S. Jackson, the photographer’s son, and first published in 1947 by Charles Scribner’s Sons, with this edition issued by Bonanza Books, a division of Crown Publishers, Inc.

The book presents hundreds of black-and-white photographs and sketches drawn from Jackson’s original negatives, diaries, and expedition notebooks, offering a vivid pictorial history of the American West. Subjects include Native American portraits, frontier encampments, railroad survey expeditions, and early views of Yellowstone and the Rockies. The dust jacket features the historic image of Pawnee scouts Blue Hawk and Coming-Around-With-The-Herd, with striking early photographs on both covers.

Jackson’s pioneering images were instrumental in the establishment of Yellowstone National Park (1872) and remain vital records of westward expansion. This volume is regarded as one of the most complete printed retrospectives of his career, blending biographical narrative with rare visual documentation of the American frontier.

Condition:

In very good vintage condition overall. Dust jacket shows light rubbing and edge wear, with minor chipping along the spine and corners. Binding remains tight and pages are clean, with no writing or staining noted. The black-and-white photographic reproductions retain strong contrast and clarity. A solid, collectible copy of an important Western Americana and photographic history title.

Dimensions:

Approx. 11 x 8.5 inches (Hardcover with dust jacket)

This Bonanza Books edition remains one of the most visually compelling and accessible tributes to William H. Jackson — the photographer whose images helped define the mythos and reality of the Old West. A cornerstone reference for collectors of Western history, early American photography, or National Park exploration ephemera.
