Native Nations — Edward S. Curtis / Callaway Editions, 1993 First Edition
First edition of Native Nations: First North Americans as Seen by Edward S. Curtis, published by Callaway Editions in 1993 under the Bulfinch Press imprint of Little, Brown & Company. With a foreword by George P. Horse Capture and editing by Curtis scholar Christopher Cardozo, this large-format volume presents more than 100 of Curtis’s most powerful images, reproduced in rich quadratone printing to honor the tonal depth of his original photogravures.
Produced to the highest standards of fine-art publishing, this 160-page folio captures the dignity and complexity of Indigenous life as documented in Curtis’s monumental series The North American Indian. The cover and frontispiece feature Koskimo’s Núłimkilaka (1914), a portrait of the forest spirit “bringer of confusion” from the Quatsino Sound tribes. An outstanding presentation of one of America’s most significant photographic legacies.
Condition:
In very good condition overall, showing light edge and corner wear with a faint rub to the dust jacket surface. Interior pages are clean, bright, and free of marks, with secure binding and vivid tonal reproduction. A well-cared-for, collectible example of this important first edition.
Dimensions:
Approx. 12.25 x 10.25 inches (folio format).
