Description

Olin B. West “Coherent Ability” 2006 Oil on Linen, Signed & Framed

Olin B. West (American, b. mid-20th century)
Coherent Ability, 2006

Coherent Ability (2006) is an original oil on linen by New Mexico–based artist Olin B. West, exemplifying his meditative approach to contemporary abstraction. The work features a bold field of vertical red impasto strokes layered over a violet ground, divided horizontally to create balance between structure and spontaneity. The richly tactile surface and geometric rhythm reflect West’s ongoing exploration of repetition, spatial order, and material depth.

Professionally framed without glass in a contemporary black float frame by Frame & Art Center, Las Cruces, New Mexico. Originally offered at $1,200 in 2007, this work represents an early example from West’s mature Mud Mountain Studio period and stands as a strong statement of his Southwestern abstract sensibility.

Artist Biography

Olin B. West is an American painter and multidisciplinary artist based in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, where he operates Mud Mountain Studio. Working primarily in oil on linen, West is recognized for his richly textured abstract compositions that explore rhythm, repetition, and spatial harmony through color and surface. His signature use of structured impasto and geometric patterning reflects a meditative engagement with process and material.

Largely self-taught, West pursued additional study at the Santa Fe School of Fine Art and the Institute of American Indian Art, integrating both philosophical and formal approaches to artmaking. Before focusing exclusively on painting, he worked in wearable art, metalwork, beadwork, and sculpture—each informing the tactile sensibility that defines his canvases.

West’s work has been exhibited throughout the American Southwest, including in Las Cruces, Elephant Butte, and Truth or Consequences, and is represented by RioBravoFineArt Gallery in New Mexico. His paintings are held in numerous private collections and regional art spaces. Through Mud Mountain Studio, he continues to produce paintings that bridge minimalism and expression, balancing structured order with intuitive mark-making.
