Vintage Aluminum “R R” Railroad Advance Warning Sign – 36” Round, MUTCD-Era
Authentic vintage aluminum railroad advance warning sign, featuring the classic yellow reflective background with bold black “X” and “R R” lettering on a circular field. This example conforms to the MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) standards introduced in the mid-20th century, designed to alert motorists of an upcoming rail crossing. Constructed from durable, heavy-gauge aluminum with original mounting holes and welded rear reinforcement bar, this sign was field-used along U.S. roadways during the modernization of railroad safety signage in the 1960s–1980s.
The piece displays genuine service wear including surface scuffs, dings, and edge marks consistent with long-term outdoor display. Its patina and mounting impressions confirm authentic field use, not reproduction manufacture. The reflective finish retains strong color and contrast, making it a standout for display. A historically accurate and visually striking piece of railroadiana, representing an important era in American transportation safety.
Condition:
Good, previously mounted, showing dings, dents, and scratches throughout with signs of outdoor display. Surface wear and patina are consistent with authentic field use and do not detract from the sign’s legibility or presentation. Structurally solid and display-ready.
