Dressel Railway Lamp – C.M.St.P.&P.R.R. Yellow Steel Switch Lantern
A striking four-way railroad switch lantern by Dressel Railway Lamp & Signal Co., Arlington, New Jersey, embossed on the crown “DRESSEL ARLINGTON N.J. U.S.A.” and stamped on the base “C.M.St.P.&P.R.R.” for the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad—a line legendary for its innovation and “Hiawatha” streamliners.
Crafted in heavy steel with four original convex glass lenses—two red for “stop” and two amber for “proceed with caution”—this lantern once guided trains across Midwestern rail yards. Its hinged vented top and interior compartment originally held a kerosene burner, projecting light through each colored lens to communicate track status. Finished in high-visibility yellow, it remains a vivid artifact of the steam-to-diesel era of American railroading.
The Dressel Railway Lamp & Signal Co., established in the late 19th century, became one of the premier U.S. manufacturers of railroad lighting equipment, later merging with Adams & Westlake but continuing to bear the proud Dressel name for decades. Collectors prize these multi-lens signal lamps—especially those marked for specific lines—as tangible reminders of the precision and romance of early rail travel.
