Victorian-Era Darning Egg
A finely crafted Victorian-era darning egg, featuring an ornate sterling silver handle marked “Sterling” and decorated in raised repoussé scroll and shell motifs. The smooth black egg-shaped top is likely ebonized wood, used as a surface for mending stockings and other textiles.
As is typical for fine silver grooming and sewing implements of this period, the handle is hollow, formed from two joined halves—an elegant example of late 19th-century domestic craftsmanship. A beautiful and functional addition to any antique sewing or vanity collection.
Condition
Good overall, with visible wear to the top and light surface marks consistent with age and use. We’ll leave the polishing to you—the silver retains a pleasing patina. Secure at the ferrule and structurally sound. Please review photos for full detail.
