Description

Spica Angelus Floorstanding Speakers — Matched Pair, Santa Fe NM

Pair of Spica Angelus floorstanding loudspeakers, serial numbers 0820A and 0820B, handcrafted in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. Designed by John Bau and introduced in the late 1980s, the Angelus is among the most distinctive and admired American loudspeakers of its era. Its striking, time-aligned pyramid form was engineered to synchronize the acoustic output of its woofer and tweeter—delivering extraordinary imaging accuracy and soundstage depth. The cabinets feature warm oak veneer sides and black baffles, with original spica badges and 8-ohm binding posts on the rear.

This model’s design, dedicated to acoustician Richard Heyser, exemplifies Spica’s devotion to phase coherence and minimalist crossover engineering. Critics praised the Angelus for its “disappearing act” in the listening room—producing a vivid, three-dimensional presentation with remarkable tonal balance. Revered in Stereophile and now considered a cult classic, the Angelus stands as a landmark in U.S. high-fidelity craftsmanship and design innovation.

Condition

In good condition overall, fully functional and tested. Cones are in good shape and sound clear across the range. Grille cloths show fading, with one darker than the other. Cabinets show only faint wear consistent with age but retain a handsome finish and solid structure. One owner since new.

Dimensions

Each speaker measures approximately 45 3/4 in. (H) × 21 in. (W) × 10 1/4 in. (D).

Technical & Performance Overview

The Spica Angelus was engineered from the ground up for phase and time alignment, a principle that few loudspeakers of its era executed so precisely. Designer John Bau crafted the cabinet’s distinctive tapered, slanted profile to ensure that the acoustic output from the woofer and tweeter arrives at the listener’s ear in perfect synchrony. This results in an unusually coherent soundstage—voices and instruments appear naturally placed and lifelike within a three-dimensional image.

Each cabinet houses an 8-inch TPX-coned woofer and a 1-inch soft-dome tweeter in a sealed enclosure, chosen for speed, transparency, and accurate low-frequency behavior. Unlike ported designs that emphasize bass output, the Angelus favors tight, articulate low end and exceptional midrange purity. The crossover, a mix of first- and fourth-order slopes, was computer-optimized for both amplitude and phase accuracy—an innovative approach for the late 1980s.

With a frequency response of 45 Hz–17.5 kHz (±3 dB) and sensitivity around 87 dB/W/m, the Angelus delivers open, natural sound that excels with vocal, acoustic, and classical recordings. Its 8-ohm nominal impedance and gentle load make it compatible with a wide range of quality amplifiers, from vintage solid-state receivers to refined modern separates.

Internally, the non-parallel cabinet panels reduce standing waves, while dense internal damping and felt-lined surfaces minimize reflections—factors contributing to the Angelus’s renowned midrange clarity. Reviewers in Stereophile and contemporary hi-fi publications lauded its ability to “disappear” within a room, creating a seamless, holographic presentation that remains a benchmark for time-coherent loudspeakers.
