Description

c.1830–1850 American Cherry Two-Drawer Stand with Glass Knobs & Turned Legs
An authentic example of early 19th-century American craftsmanship, this solid cherry two-drawer stand beautifully reflects the transitional style between the late Federal and early Empire periods. Featuring hand-cut dovetail drawers, early glass knobs, and 2-inch turned legs, it combines refined simplicity with robust charm. Constructed with hand-cut nails and hand-planed surfaces, this unmarked piece was likely made by a skilled rural cabinetmaker between 1830 and 1850.

During this period, American furniture making stood at the crossroads of tradition and innovation. Most pieces were still crafted by hand in small workshops, where artisans shaped and joined solid wood using time-honored techniques. Cherry was prized for its fine grain and warm hue, while the new popularity of glass knobs reflected a growing national taste for elegance and light. The result—seen here—is furniture that was both enduring and artful, balancing functionality with quiet sophistication.

With its mellow patina and graceful proportions, this table offers a tangible connection to early American domestic life. Ideal beside a bed, sofa, or reading chair, it stands as both a useful piece and a genuine artifact of 19th-century craftsmanship.

Condition:
Good overall with scuffing and finish wear consistent with age. Some wear to the top and turned legs; minor age cracks to the side panels; no key present. Drawers operate smoothly, glass knobs intact and likely period or early replacements. Structurally sound and stable with an appealing aged finish.
