A mid-20th century Zuni fetish necklace, acquired in New Mexico, composed of thirteen hand-carved stone animal fetishes—nine birds and four bears—crafted from serpentine, jasper, and related hardstones in shades of green, gray, and tan. Each carving exhibits the soft polish and stylized form characteristic of mid-century Zuni stonework, representing spiritual qualities of protection, strength, and freedom in Zuni tradition.
The necklace centers on a large bird pendant, complemented by (26) 3.7 mm sterling silver beads and 2.81 mm rolled beads. Strung on wire and finished with sterling cones and a traditional silver hook clasp, the necklace weighs 46.45 grams and measures 26 inches in total length.
Fetish necklaces of this style were created by Zuni artisans in the mid-20th century, when ceremonial carvings symbolizing animal guardianship evolved into wearable art highly sought by collectors. This example reflects both cultural symbolism and fine hand-carving typical of that period.
