Louise Platero Navajo Sterling Silver & Turquoise Brooch Pin
A handsome handmade sterling silver brooch by noted Navajo silversmith Louise Platero, featuring a striking oval turquoise cabochon framed by classic Southwestern leaf and raindrop motifs. The cabochon displays a vivid blue-green hue with tan-to-brown matrix, beautifully contrasted against the dark oxidized silver background.
Louise Platero (active mid-20th century) was a respected member of the renowned Platero family of Navajo artisans, whose name literally translates to “silversmith” in Spanish. Working alongside her husband, Ramon Platero, she created distinctive hand-forged jewelry celebrated for its craftsmanship, bold natural stones, and balanced compositions of appliqué and stampwork. This brooch embodies her style — organic yet refined, deeply rooted in Navajo design traditions.
The piece is signed “L. Platero” and marked “Handmade” on the reverse. Crafted of tested sterling silver with oxidized background and polished relief. The turquoise cabochon measures approximately 22.05 mm x 19.03 mm (0.87" x 0.75"), bezel-set within an oval frame adorned with a hand-cut feather, three raised bar elements, and domed “raindrop” beads, one subtly textured for dimension. Fitted with a handmade horizontal pin and catch.
This versatile piece can also be easily worn as a pendant using a standard pin-to-pendant adapter (such as this style on Amazon).
Condition
Good vintage condition. Turquoise is secure with natural inclusions but no visible cracks or repairs. Silver shows tarnish, patina, and light wear consistent with age and handmade craftsmanship. Pin mechanism functions properly. Left unpolished to preserve original patina and character
