Description

Sports Illustrated 1966 UTEP Western Championship Issue

Original Sports Illustrated magazine, March 28, 1966 issue, featuring the historic cover of Texas Western’s Harry Flournoy battling Kentucky’s Pat Riley during the NCAA Championship. Headlined “Texas Western Takes It All,” this issue commemorates the Miners’ groundbreaking 72–65 victory — the first NCAA basketball title won by a team starting five Black players.

That triumph, achieved under Coach Don Haskins, forever changed college basketball and marked a defining moment for El Paso and UTEP athletics. The win not only secured Texas Western’s place in sports history but also advanced integration and equality in American athletics.

Rear cover features a full-page DuPont Corfam advertisement for Jarman wingtips, completing this authentic 1966 publication. A cornerstone issue for collectors of sports, UTEP, and civil rights history alike.
