Antique Cast Iron “State Safe” Still Bank with Combination Dial, c. Late 1800s–Early 1900s
A fine antique cast iron still bank modeled as a miniature safe, embossed “STATE SAFE” across the door and featuring a numbered combination dial at center. This turn-of-the-century piece was part of a popular line of “safe-form” banks produced by American foundries such as J. & E. Stevens and Kenton during the late 19th to early 20th centuries. These charming miniature safes encouraged thrift in children while imitating the secure style of real bank vaults. The sides display ornate molded scrollwork and geometric patterns, with a coin slot at the top. The underside retains its original printed paper instructions—an uncommon and desirable survival.
Condition:
Good overall, with age-appropriate surface wear, oxidation, and finish loss consistent with use and age. The safe was not able to be opened using the included combination instructions, though the dial and mechanism appear intact. Presents well for display and remains a collectible example of early American cast iron craftsmanship.
