Description

Signed Flores Arias Ironwood Female Head — Modernist Sculpture with Brass Base

Signed mid-20th-century modernist head sculpture by Flores Arias, finely carved and mounted on a tiered ironwood plinth with a brass overlay. The piece depicts a stylized female face with smooth, elongated features and serene expression, reflecting Arias’ balance of folk tradition and modernist form. The natural depth and sheen of the wood enhance its sculptural presence. Signed “Arias” along the neck.

Flores Arias was a 20th-century sculptor active in Mexico, recognized for refined carvings in dense native hardwoods such as ironwood. His signed works appear in international auction records and are noted for merging indigenous motifs with minimalist modern design. This example exemplifies that synthesis — a timeless and elegant piece of Latin American modernist sculpture.

Condition

Good condition overall, with some fine cracking to the finish and a small area of wear on the base, consistent with age and display. No remarkable damage or structural issues noted.
