Description

Victorian English Mahogany Display Cabinet c. 1870

An English display cabinet from the second half of the 19th century, crafted in Victorian style using solid mahogany and mahogany veneers. While firmly Victorian in overall form, the cabinet exhibits subtle early Art Nouveau influences, particularly in the flowing floral marquetry and the sinuous, whiplash-like curves of the upper brackets and decorative elements.

The cabinet features a shaped crest with floral marquetry, a central bowed glass door, and flanking beveled mirrors framed by delicate 2" turned columns. The lower section is fitted with two bowed glass doors, continuing the curved display form and creating a balanced, elegant façade. Fine inlay trim and floral motifs are carried throughout the case, reflecting the late-19th-century emphasis on ornament and craftsmanship.

The cabinet separates into two sections for easier handling and placement. The upper section contains two removable shelves with approximately 10.5" and 10" of interior clearance, while the lower section includes a removable shelf with approximately 13" of interior height. Raised on slender 1.5" tapered legs, the piece maintains a light, vertical presence while offering generous display space. Designed for the presentation of porcelain, glassware, or decorative objects, this cabinet is a strong example of late Victorian furniture transitioning toward more fluid, organic design.
