Pair of Chinese Rosewood Horseshoe Chairs w/ Mother-of-Pearl Inlay
Pair of Chinese horseshoe-back armchairs, early to mid-20th century, finely crafted from rosewood (hongmu) and richly inlaid with mother-of-pearl. The continuous curved crest rail and sweeping arms form the classic “official’s hat” or horseshoe silhouette, emblematic of traditional Ming-inspired design. Each chair features twin openwork splats carved as blossoming branches rising from vase-shaped bases, with the seat and crest rail delicately inlaid with birds and flowering motifs.
This form, long associated with status and refined taste, reflects the enduring legacy of Ming dynasty furniture craftsmanship adapted for 20th-century collectors and export markets. The dense, lustrous hardwood and luminous shell inlay showcase exceptional skill in both carving and joinery. A beautiful and balanced pair, ideal for display or functional accent seating in a refined interior.
Condition
Good overall condition. Structurally sturdy, with age-appropriate wear to the wood and some visible separation at joints. Minor cracks and small inlay losses consistent with age and use (see photos). The finish retains a warm patina and presents attractively.
